How I Clean My Makeup Brushes + Storage Ideas

Hey loves!

I hope you are having a beautiful week! I’ve been crazy busy lately, but I wanted to take some time to share some “behind the scenes” of my brushes + makeup stash.

You can’t have a flawless face without clean brushes, am I right? 😉

I don’t know about you guys, but I typically like to deep clean all of my brushes a couple of times a month / once a week. Since I don’t have tons of brushes, it doesn’t take me too long to get the job done.

First Step

This is a silicone Dermalogica facial cleansing mitt that came with a product I received a while ago. I used it a few times, and then one night it ripped (bottom left corner). I decided to stop using it on my face after that.

I realized that it would be a perfect accessory to use for brush cleaning, so I repurposed it!

My process is really simple. I use a bar of pure Castile soap (Dr. Bronner’s brand if you’re curious) and I rub some onto the mitt. I dampen one brush at a time and I continuously swirl it onto the mitt so that it can get gently scrubbed clean. Then I rinse the brush off, give it a shake to get the excess water off, and set it down on some paper towels to dry.

I just repeat the same process until all of the brushes are clean and then set down to dry. I rinse off my mitt and put that down on the paper towels to dry as well. Once everything is dry to the touch (a few hours or overnight) it’s time for me to put them away.

Second Step

I currently keep all of my brushes inside this Starbucks coffee mug. I personally like how it looks, fits, and it has a handle so I can just easily carry it over to wherever I’m planning on applying my makeup. That’s pretty much it!

Makeup Storage

Next to my mug full of brushes, I have a decorative box with all of my makeup and other related items. This is my favorite solution so far for people like me with smaller amounts of makeup that require less space.

To the left I have two small recycled glass jars. One is for mascara tubes, the other is for all of my eyebrow products.

On the right side of the jars I have a plastic divider with six compartments. On top: powders, eye makeup, and lips. The bottom: foundation, additional eye makeup, and my blending sponge.

Last, but not least, I have my palettes tucked away behind the divider.

That leaves me with a small corner still available on the top left side just in case I want to add anything else. 🙂

Everything has a home and a proper place, and that makes my life organized and easy! I hope this gives you some inspiration on how to arrange your own beauty collection or clean your brushes! ✨
